About Matthew G. Martinez

Matthew G. Martinez is an entrepreneur, operator, investor and advisor who helps founders, owners and leadership teams strengthen their businesses through practical strategy, operational leadership and disciplined execution.

I work mostly with founder-led and family-owned companies whose growth has outrun their systems and team, and with investor-backed and growth-stage companies that need experienced operating leadership. I've sat in the owner's chair, so I know how much rides on getting it right.

My story

I started my first business at 18, in events, entertainment and nightlife in Hollywood, and later worked in the trades. Those early years taught me what every business eventually learns: growth only lasts if the systems and the people behind it keep up.

In 2016 I co-founded a consumer packaged goods company and took it from launch to statewide distribution in under three years, reaching 150+ retail outlets, about a quarter of the statewide market, within eight months. In 2019 I led it through its acquisition by a venture-backed, multi-state operating company in regulated consumer products, where I became co-founder and CEO.

Over the next five years I built 12 businesses on that platform across research, consumer products, manufacturing, distribution, direct-to-consumer delivery and retail, in four state markets. I co-founded and led three of them myself, reported to an eleven-member investor board, and led five M&A transactions.

In 2024 I joined a merchant bank and advisory firm serving growth-stage companies in regulated markets, in a part-time role helping founders prepare for capital raises. In 2025 I became President and sole executive officer of a 100+ person, multi-site manufacturer, wholesaler and retailer, reporting to a five-member shareholder board, and helped it move to a professionally managed company.

Today I advise, consult and lead through M2 Ventures, and in 2026 I took on a role as Strategic Advisor and Chief Growth Officer of a trades business in centralized hot water systems.

Why I do this work

I've had an amazing journey over nineteen years, and I made my share of mistakes along the way. I'm confident in what I've learned and what I've delivered, and I want owners, founders, investors and teams to avoid the mistakes I made. Sharing what I've learned is how I give back, and how I hope to influence, impact and inspire their success.

That's also why I mentor founders and early-career operators at no cost.

How do I lead?

I lead through servant leadership, accountability and transparency. Each one shows up in specific things I do.

Servant leadership. A leader serves the people above, alongside and below them. I owe the people who follow me leadership and support in reaching their goals, aligned with the goals of the whole business.

Accountability. Every priority has a clear owner, a goal and a review date. I run a set rhythm of monthly, quarterly and annual business reviews, so leaders own their results, starting with me.

Transparency. Owners and boards see what I see. I build reporting that shows performance at the level where decisions get made, and I share problems as early as progress.

Investing

I invest at the angel, pre-seed and seed stages, take equity in growth-stage companies and provide growth-stage debt. I'm sector-agnostic. Occasionally I invest in companies I advise, always by separate agreement.

My investing grows out of years of capital work. I've raised $20M+ for my own ventures, and in an advisory role I placed $25M+ of growth-stage debt for companies and prepared founders for $15M+ in completed equity raises.
